Mufti Abdur Rahman Ibn Yusuf emphasises the importance of intention to the acceptance of invitations over a feeling of obligation to attending.

He mentions significant Hadith supporting the importance of tying knots of kinship, particularly via one Hadith from Bukhari and Muslim that stresses the many benefits of maintaining ties with kin and relatives: some benefits of keeping ties include enjoying a rich and fulfilling, longer life, full of better quality, and an extension in sustenance (including blessings in their money, wealth, food, homes, jobs, social interaction, and even in lifespan itself).

The sincere and well meant intention of maintaining ties for the sake of kinship and knowing you will make your relative happy despite the financial cost or time involved will make your efforts of attending a function worthwhile, which Allah makes worth your while in this world and in the hereafter.

Further aspects of intentions towards sillatul raham (maintaining the ties of kinship) are mentioned which we may think are insignificant but actually have a great impact. The strength of this topic to the survival of social life is explained well to enhance our understanding of the enormity of working towards ensuring sillatul raham takes place in our own lives.

Dr. Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf

Dr. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf Mangera is a British Muslim scholar educated in both the Islamic and Western traditions. He memorised the Qur’an by heart and graduated from the Darul Uloom seminary Bury, UK, and later earned a specialised licence to issue fatwa (legal responses) at Mazahir ‘Ulum Saharanpur, India. He earned his BA from the University of Johannesburg and completed his MA and PhD in Islamic Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He holds an honorary fellowship at The Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, Amman, Jordan. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman has the unique experience of serving as an imam in Muslim communities on both sides of the Atlantic, eight years in Southern California and over five in the great city of London—and his continued work as an international speaker and lecturer enables him to address and offer pertinent advice on current challenges that face Muslims in the West.
