Istiqama (Steadfastness) in Worship
In this talk, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman begins by mentioning how an aspirant should change their perspective of worship in order to progress in the path. To develop ones understanding of worship, the Shaykh mentions that a part of it includes the individual working out things for themselves, but it is crucial that they are under the guidance of an experienced teacher. This will safeguard one from deviating from the path and it is only through the wise words from ones teacher can one be taught the more refined ways of worship. Shaykh Mangera then talks about how it is important for one to have istiqamah (steadfastness) in performing acts of devotion and not become extreme minded in either becoming completely heedless or excessive in worship. Allah mentions in the Qur’an “I did not create Jinn and mankind except to worship me” but it does not mean that one deprives their mind and body from indulgence as these also have a right over us. The prophet (may peace and blessings be upon Him) emphasised on the middle path, our deen if of moderation and worship should be the same. Shaykh Abdur-Rahman therefore mentions that for one to have the wuquf qalbi they must rectify their intentions with every action even if it is regarding worldly affairs. Allah says regarding the ones who have understanding, they are those “who remember Allah standing and sitting and on their sides…”. Worship is thereby the way one leads their life and not something of formality in which a person is in constant worship.
