The Faqir and the Old Man (Shaytan) | Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf
Shaykh Abdur Rahman (hafizahullah) recites a verse from Surat al-Bayyinah in which Allah mentions how He has commanded worship of Him alone and for the servant to make their religious practises purely for Him. Shaykh reveals how sincerity is the ultimate goal for the seeker on the path in which he or she desires for the acceptance of their deeds in the court of Allah. He reveals how this trait is only learnt from the ‘people of Allah’ (being in the company of the mashayikh). During the initial stages of carrying out a virtuous deed the salik could pass through challenges of riya’ (ostentation) and insincerity (either desiring the admiration of the people or doing a deed to attain the benefit for him or herself) before the pure ikhlas can be attained. Here the Shaykh advises that during this struggle the aspirant should not pay heed to the whispers of shaitan, who will try to make them abandon the virtuous deed altogether. The aspirant should continue with their action as eventually they will be able to carry it out seeking purely the pleasure of Allah.
